Google on Thursday honoured late legendary actress Madhubala with a doodle on her 86th birth anniversary.
Widely known as 'The Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood', Madhubala was a gifted actor and was known for her beauty, personality and sensitive portrayals of women in films.
Born in Delhi on this day [Feb 14] in 1933, Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi was raised in a town located near the Bombay Talkies film studio. She appeared in her first film at the age of 9, billed as Baby Mumtaz.
Raised in the slums of Bombay, she supported her family as a child star and soon became a leading lady known for her elegance on screen and considerable acting abilities.
In 1947, she landed the lead role in Neel Kamal at the age of 14, taking the name Madhubala. As the family’s main breadwinner, she worked tirelessly to support her parents and four sisters.
She famously fell in love with actor Dilip Kumar, her co-star in cult classic Mughal-E-Azam (1960). Her character as Anarkali and the chemistry with Kumar, who essayed the role of Salim, is still etched in millions of hearts across the country.
"While her breathtaking appearance earned comparisons to Venus, Madhubala was a gifted actor with an understated style well suited for comedies, dramas, and romantic roles alike," Google said in its blog.
Madhubala appeared in nine films during 1949, including a spellbinding breakout performance in the box office hit Mahal.
Appearing in over 70 films over the course of a tragically brief career, Madhubala was called “The Biggest Star in the World” in 1952 by Theatre Arts magazine.
Madhubala's fledging career and life was cut short when she breathed her last on February 23, 1969, due to prolonged illness.
In 2008, the legendary actress appeared on a commemorative postage stamp in India, where she is remembered by many as one of the greatest to ever grace the silver screen.

Raj Kapoor's Sangam, first Bollywood film shot abroad
To date, the Hindi cinema, especially Bollywood, is almost obsessed with foreign locales and exotic places to shoot their stories in. But it had all started back in 1964 when Raj Kapoor decided to shoot his film Sangam in foreign locales including Switzerland, Paris and Venice. After then, the trend picked up with filmmakers and producers desiring to shoot their stories away from India against the backdrop of exuberant international landscapes.
Perhaps that's why the title Sangam, translating to "confluence", seems more apt than ever! The film led Bollywood to go global and well, it's a trend that has stayed on. From Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar to Imtiaz Ali and Zoya Akhtar to Ali Abbas Zafar – the filmmakers have always got Indian audiences to travel to far-off places.
The romantic film was directed by Raj Kapoor, written by Inder Raj Anand and produced by Raj Kapoor with Mehboob Studio and Filmistan. It starred Vyjanthimala, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Mehra, Nana Palsikar and Lali Pawar apart from Raj Kapoor.
Besides the fact that it will always be remembered as the first film to be shot abroad, the film also marked a significant milestone in Raj Kapoor's own filmography as it was his first colour film. The film had gone to become a blockbuster in that era and to date, it's referred to as a classic of the Indian cinema. The film's songs, too, were loved and listeners continue to sing them. To name a few, I Love You, Bol Radha Bol, Dost Dost Na Raha, Yeh Mera Prem Patra, Main Kya Karoon Ram and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega are the songs that have lived on. The film had also released in Turkey, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary among others and was also remade in Kannada and Telugu.
