The fifth annual Senior’s Diwali Program organized by the Indo Caribbean Organization was a smashing success! This yearly event is to give appreciation to the elders of the community. The well-attended affair started off with an informative yoga presentation by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh followed by invocational Bharatnatyam dances by the Nritya Kala Mandir Dance Group. The brother and sister combination of Amanda and Ravi Singh enthralled the crowd with their impressive performances. Darnella DeVito captivated the audience with a moving rendition of the popular "Hey Ann Dhanna Ki Maharani" while Hailey Mohan contributed a sensational dance item. Neil Singh, accompanied by Devin Ramdin on Tabla, rendered a beautiful Shri Ram bhajan. Featured artiste Nalini Chaitan was joined on Tabla by Brian Raghubir to mesmerize the audience with four of Lata Mangeshkar’s evergreen selections. The brother and sisters combination – Maya, Siera and Brandon Sooknanan – made their memorable debut on the show. An electrifying dance by the organization's little jewel, Sitara, charmed all in attendance before the break for a mouth-watering dinner. Arnav Malhotra opened the post-dinner session with a traditional Bangra Dance followed by a delightful offering by the trio of Maadhavi, Anupa and Anuradha Ragoonanan. The youthful Raman Bisoondial was another debutant on the show. Popular vocalist Rex Singh sang two Anup Jalota bhajans to an appreciative audience. Narain Ramdowar who accompanied other artistes on stage, did a medley of very popular Geets and Bhajans. The show took on an international flavour when recording artiste from India, Palak Bhatt, made a very special guest appearance. But the night truly belonged to 1999 Mastana Bahar winner Shiva Lakhan of New York who did a wide repertoire of songs. The enthusiastic audience requested him to come back on stage for an encore performance. He was accompanied by Sudesh Narine and Ryan Mohammed on Dholak and Dhantal. This show would not have been a success were it not for the cooperation of Suresh Samlal and the residence of 35 Shoreham Drive especially Aunty Malty, where the event took place. |
