Twenty of my favourite quotes from the movies |
|
![]() |
My trilogy on movie nostalgia ends with 20 of my favourite quotes from the movies. From Love Story (1970), came Ali McGraw as Jennifer Cavillari Barret saying “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” From Casablanca (1942), Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine says, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” From The Godfather (1972), Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone says these immortal words, “I’m |
going to make him an offer, he can’t refuse.”
From the movie Shane (1953), Brandon De Wilde as the boy Joey Starrett says plaintively, “Shane, Shane, come back!” |

In For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gary Cooper as Robert Jordan in the sad goodbye scene says to Maria (Ingrid Bergman), “We will not go to America or to Madrid but I go always with you, wherever you go …” In Casablanca (1942), Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund says to the piano player, “Play it Sam, play As Time Goes By.” Mae West as Lady Lou in She Done Him Wrong (!933) says, “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime when I’ve got nothing on but the radio.” Mae West was also quoted as saying on stage or screen, “Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?” From Gone With the Wind (1939), Clark Gable as Rhett Butler says, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” This is probably the most popular quote from the most popular movie of all time. From Star Wars (1977), Harrison Ford as Han Solo says, “May the Force be with you.” Gary Cooper in the Pride of the Yankees (1942) as Lou Gehrig, the famous American baseball player says “Today I consider myself the luckiest man in the world.” “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer” – a quote from Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather Two (1974). |

Do you remember Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock in the Graduate (1967)? “Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me, aren’t you?” was his memorable line. Vivien Leigh as Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), says, “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” Bud Abbott as Dexter in The Naughty Nineties (1945), comes up with “Who’s on first?” Rosalind Russell as Mame Dennis in Auntie Mame (1958) says, “Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death.” Then there is “I feel the need – the need for speed” as spoken by Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun (1986). “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” was spoken by Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing (1987). Tom Hanks as astronaut Jim Lovell says in Apollo 13 (1995) “Houston, we have a problem.” “Carpe Diem – seize the day, boys! Make your lives extraordinary” was spoken by Robin Williams as John Keating in Dead Poet’s Society (1989). Incidentally, Carpe Diem is the motto of Berbice High School as depicted on their crest. Berbice High School will be having their global reunion in Toronto on July 22. Now, what do you think are my most ‘famous’ words? Perhaps, they were “Walk Good Guyana Boy”, the title of one of my books (1994). Ah gone fuh now! If the creeks don’t rise and the sun still shines, I’ll be talking to you. And by the way, if you find any good movies for a hopeless romantic like me, let me know. |
